Second Sub Secondary Classification of Fingerprint: Rules, Procedure & Example

The second sub secondary division is a rarely used extension for classifying fingerprints in the Henry system. This classification is generally used when a fingerprint class becomes too large for an effective small searching group. So, the very first aim of this extension is to simplify and speed up the identification process.

Later, in this post, you will get to know how to calculate the classification values. I also add two practice worksheets, try them out.

Rules for Second Sub Secondary Classification

  • Numerator: Right Index, middle, and ring finger
  • Denominator: Left Index, middle and ring finger
  • Position: placed above the values of sub secondary classification
  • Patterns: Loops
  • Values: Ridge Count

Numerical Values For Second Sub Secondary Classification

Values of this classification extension are majorly given in terms of capital letters ‘S’, ‘M’, and ‘L’. Following is the table for numerical values associated with this classification for loops.

ValuesIndexMiddleRing
Small (S)1 to 51 to 81 to 10
Medium (M)6 to 129 to 1411 to 18
Large (L)13 or more15 or more19 or more

How to Calculate Second Sub Secondary Classification?

Following is the 10-digit card. You can check the dedicated post on how to fill and what are the rules for filling a 10-digit card (coming soon).

How to Calculate Second Sub Secondary Classification

Step 1: Evaluate Value for All 6 Henry Classification

I created a dedicated article on how you calculate the value of all 6 Henry classification systems.

Step 2: Finding Values for Second Sub Secondary Classification

Right Hand Loop Counts

  • Index= 14= L
  • Middle= 16= L
  • Ring= 19= L

Left Hand Loop Counts

  • Index= 14= L
  • Middle= 14= M
  • Ring= 16= M

Step 3: Representation in Henry Classification line

This is how the second sub secondary value is represented in the henry classification system.

Representation of second subsecondary in Henry Classification line

In case of scarred, amputated, finger missing from birth, the values of this extension share the same rules of sub secondary. You can check the article: Sub secondary classification of fingerprints.
